British luxury jewellery designer Anabela Chan has once again captivated the world with her latest creation, the Fruit Gems collection. Known for her pioneering work in ethical and sustainable jewellery, Chan’s newest collection transforms discarded fruits and vegetables into vibrant, wearable gemstones.
This groundbreaking collection combines material innovation, sustainability, and high design to redefine luxury jewellery.
What is the Fruit Gems Collection?
The Fruit Gems collection by Anabela Chan represents a revolutionary step in sustainable jewellery. Using pigments derived from food waste, Chan creates dazzling gemstones that are durable, wearable, and visually striking.
The collection features nearly 40 unique pieces, including rings, earrings, and pendants, made from Spinach, Beetroot, Blueberry, Purple Sweet Potato, Spirulina, Plankton, and Dragon Fruit.
Anabela Chan transforms these fruits and vegetables into lab-created gemstones that rival the beauty of traditional gems while leaving a much lighter environmental footprint.
How Are Fruit Gems Made?
Chan’s process is both scientific and artistic. Over several years of experimentation in her London atelier, she perfected methods to extract natural pigments from food waste using Crushing, Simmering, Freeze-drying, and Air-drying. She stabilises these pigments, including carotenoids, flavonoids, betalains, anthocyanins, and chlorophyll, with plant-based bio-resins derived from corn, soy, agave, and avocado seeds. Once hardened, her team cuts, facets, polishes, and even casts these bio-resins like conventional gemstones, creating durable jewels suitable for fine jewellery settings.
