On 23 January 2025, Dr. Abdulnasser Alshaali, PhD, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India, visited the headquarters of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and Diamond Exchange Bharat (BDB) in Mumbai. He was warmly welcomed by eminent personalities of the Indian jewellery industry, including Mr. Kirit Bhansali, Vice Chairman, GJEPC; Mr. Anoop Mehta, Chairman, BDB; and Mr. Sabyasachi Ray, Executive Director, GJEPC.
The Ambassador was accompanied by a distinguished delegation, including Mr. Fahad Albashr, Head, of the Economic Affairs Section; Mr. Ahmed Aljneibi, Senior Economic Affairs Specialist; and Dr. Brenton Clark, Project Coordinator, UAE-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) Council.
The discussions focused on the strategic implementation of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to enhance bilateral trade in the gems and jewellery sector. The participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the possible introduction of multiple entry and long-term visas that would facilitate the movement of professionals and investors. This initiative aims to enhance trade and investment opportunities within the India Jewellery Park. Its main objective is to attract international companies and encourage collaborative efforts across the sector.
Participants presented a range of strategies to increase trade volumes while recognising the UAE’s status as the second-largest market for Indian gemstone and jewellery exports. The discussions emphasized the importance of capitalizing on this position to optimize growth potential.
The visit reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to sustainable growth and innovation in the jewellery industry. By focusing on cooperation and mutual benefit, India and the UAE aim to create a resilient environment for long-term success in the global jewellery market.
