BIS Launches Digital Hallmarking Pilot Project to Boost Transparency in Jewelry Verification

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has taken a significant step toward enhancing consumer trust in India’s jewelry market with the launch of a Pilot Project for Digital Hallmarking. This innovative initiative digitally records the photograph and weight of hallmarked jewelry across 25 Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) nationwide.

What the Digital Hallmarking Project Is About?

Under this pilot initiative, every hallmarked jewelry item will be photographed, weighed, and its details automatically uploaded to the BIS portal. Cameras integrated with the hallmarking system will capture clear images of both the jewelry article and its Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID).

Digital weighing balances, connected to the BIS system, will automatically record the item’s weight, eliminating the possibility of manual entry errors. The BIS database will store the jewelry’s image, HUID, and weight for digital verification.

Consumers can then use the BIS Care mobile application to verify the authenticity of their jewelry by viewing the stored image and weight associated with their HUID number.

Objective of the Pilot Project

The core aim of this project is to enhance transparency, accuracy, and consumer confidence in the hallmarking process. By introducing a fully digital record, BIS intends to:

  • Prevent manual data manipulation and human error.
  • Provide traceable digital proof of hallmarking for each item.
  • Empower buyers with the ability to cross-check authenticity in real time through the BIS Care app.
  • Align India’s hallmarking standards with global best practices in jewelry traceability and certification.

Pilot Project Implementation

The pilot project is being conducted over a one-month period across 25 selected AHCs. During this phase, BIS will test the efficiency of automated systems for data capture, the accuracy of digital uploads, and the ease of consumer verification. After evaluation, authorities plan to expand the project nationwide to cover all hallmarking centres.

This pilot project reflects BIS’s commitment to modernising India’s hallmarking ecosystem and supporting the Digital India vision. By combining automation, data accuracy, and consumer empowerment, the initiative marks a major leap toward a fully transparent and digitally verifiable jewelry sector.

Once successfully scaled, it will ensure that every hallmarked item sold in India carries not just a mark of purity, but also a digital proof of authenticity.
