From Classroom to the Field — IIG South Students Explore Gemology in the Real World

The Gemology and Diamond students of IIG South recently had the opportunity to step beyond the four walls of the classroom and into the field, as part of an educational visit to Mysore. The excursion, designed to complement their academic curriculum, provided students with a firsthand look at the geological landscape, mining operations, and the region’s rich mineral heritage, an experience that no textbook can truly replicate.

A key highlight of the visit was the exploration of an open-pit Magnesite mine, having deposits of chromite and Serpentine, where students learned about excavation methods, ore extraction processes, and on-site safety protocols. They also collected and examined rock samples, strengthening their understanding of mineral identification. At IIG South, practical learning is part of every programme.

A Close Look at Open Pit Mining

One of the highlights of the visit was a guided tour of an open-pit mine, where students got an up-close view of large-scale mining operations. From the sheer scale of the excavation to the step-by-step process of extraction and material handling. Experts on-site walked students through each stage of the mining process and offered insights that went well beyond what is typically covered in a classroom setting.

As part of the field activity, students collected rock samples from the site, carefully identifying and documenting each specimen. This hands-on exercise sharpened their observational skills and gave them practical exposure to field documentation, a critical skill for anyone pursuing a career in gemology, mining, or earth sciences.

Exploring the Museum

The itinerary also included a visit to a local museum, where students explored exhibits showcasing minerals, gemstones, and many more specimens from different parts of the world. The museum offered a wonderful complement to the field visit, presenting carefully curated collections and displays.

Faculty Word

Field visits like these are an integral part of our curriculum at IIG South. Seeing students apply what they have learned in the classroom to a real-world setting is incredibly rewarding.” — Faculty, Department of Diamonds, IIG South

“Classrooms teach students what to think, field visits teach them how to observe, question, and apply. The Mysore excursion was a perfect example of learning in its truest form” — Faculty, Department of Gemology, IIG South

Learning That Goes Beyond the Classroom

Throughout the visit, students were guided by experienced professionals whose insights enriched every moment of the excursion. Their ability to explain complex concepts in a practical, real-world context made the experience all the more impactful. Students returned not just with rock samples and photographs, but with a renewed curiosity and a sharper understanding of their field.

This visit reflects IIG South’s ongoing commitment to delivering an education that is as practical as it is academic. By creating opportunities for students to engage with the industry directly, in the field, at operational sites, and through expert interaction, the institute continues to prepare its students to be not just knowledgeable but truly ready for the professional world.
