The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London is set to host a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition, Marie Antoinette Style, from 20 September 2025 to 22 March 2026. This landmark show, the first of its kind in the UK, will unveil over 250 rare objects, including Marie Antoinette’s personal jewellery, lavish court fashion, original artefacts from Versailles, and modern couture inspired by her legacy.
Marie Antoinette’s Jewels on Display for the First Time in the UK
One of the exhibition’s headline attractions is the queen’s jewellery, including pieces never before displayed outside France. Among them is a diamond-and-pearl brooch that once fetched record prices at Sotheby’s, and the Sutherland necklace from the V&A’s permanent collection, believed to include stones from the infamous Boehmer and Bassenge diamond necklace — the centrepiece of the scandal that tainted the queen’s reputation.
The exhibition will display a replica of this notorious necklace alongside the real pieces, giving visitors a unique opportunity to contrast myth with material history.
More Than Just Jewels: A Full Immersive Experience
The exhibition is not limited to jewellery alone. Visitors can expect to see:
- Beaded silk slippers, fragments of court gowns, and chairs from Petit Trianon
- A crystal perfume flask from her toiletry case, scented recreations of her signature fragrance
- Her final handwritten letter before her execution — an emotional window into her last days
- Dinnerware and personal effects from her private estate
All these artefacts work together to present an intimate portrait of Marie Antoinette’s life, from opulence to downfall.
Fashion Icons from Past to Present
Marie Antoinette was arguably the world’s first fashion influencer. Her legacy continues in the exhibition through costumes and creations by:
- Dior, Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Moschino, and Valentino
- Shoes designed by Manolo Blahnik for Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette
- Photographs by Tim Walker, referencing her iconic silhouettes
The V&A exhibition showcases historical fashion alongside modern interpretations to reveal how the queen’s style has been reimagined through centuries of art, couture, and pop culture.
